Marketing has taken cyberspace by storm. Virtually every person in the United States uses a computer, tablet, or smart phone every day. With that kind of exposure it is no wonder that marketing professionals have wholly embraced the online world and seek to conquer it.

One particular strategy is email marketing. While no one likes to receive spam, there are very reputable ways to leverage email to not only attract new customers to your business but also to cultivate your current customer base.

When implementing an email marketing program, consider the following pieces of advice:
Know your audience – you should have our target market clearly defined for your email campaigns. Obviously they should be email users and have an email address. But you should understand their demographics and other traits or interests in order to properly construct an email marketing campaign.

Understand your products and services – for your target markets you should select the products or services that you wish to promote and market.

Build a process to collect email information – begin requesting email subscribers from your customer base. You can offer a special discount, a coupon, or a contest give away in order to get email addresses.
Your subscribers may choose to unsubscribe – as part of appropriate email etiquette, you should already have in place a means for your subscribers to opt-out of receiving future emails from your business.

Consider how often you will send emails – it is very important to strike a balance between getting in front of your audience all the time and becoming a nuisance. Review your target audience again and determine what they would prefer – daily? Weekly? Other?

What types of emails will you send – initially you can have a “welcome” email marketing campaign that introduces new subscribers to your business and thanks them for their time. You can have regularly scheduled announcements about new products or sales. You can also send special coupon or discount offers on select products. Some businesses even send customer testimonials (with the customer’s permission of course) about how they use the products in a creative way.

Consider partnerships – services such as Groupon or SweetJack can be great opportunities to capitalize on our email marketing. You can not only receive new subscribers but also get exposure to many other people who may not have known about your business at all.

Always take a positive spin – it is important to never threaten your customers. Emails that read “you have not bought a thing therefore we are deleting you from our database unless you buy” are doomed to failure. Come up with better ways to encourage those email subscribers to purchase by using more creative incentives.

For businesses that may need some help with email marketing campaigns, consider using a professional firm who understands the art of email marketing and how to create successful campaigns. With the right attitude and ammunition your email marketing can go a long way.
