Unless you have deep pockets and can afford to buy traffic using pay per click services, you will rely on your positioning on the major search engines for your traffic.

You must place in the top 10 positions of the search results to get any kind of measureable traffic. You may get some traffic if you can make it to the top 20. Lower than that and it's touch and go.

You must find the keyword phrases that people will use when they are looking for websites like your own. Then you have to find variations of the keyword phrase with the lowest number of competing websites.

You can do this research for free. You can also pay for services that will make the process easier.

I recommend that first timers focus on creating good content websites and building traffic from Yahoo, MSN and Ask.

If you want to get frustrated, focus on Google. In my opinion Google has lost their way and outsmarted themselves by trying to keep people from manipulating their search position. Your position on Google is determined mainly by the websites that link to yours.

Because of that the websites with the money to buy links from websites with a high pagerank, will rank the highest on Google. Content is secondary on Google.

I stopped trading links on our main website, www.createafreewebsite.net, about 2 years ago. I rely on natural linking. In that 2 years our pagerank on Google dropped from a 5 to a 3 and our site dropped out of sight in the SERPS.

The traffic that we lost on Google, we've picked up on Yahoo, just by providing solid content and relying on natural linking.

You'll probably never find this website on Google. I've recently discontinued the link trading fiasco for this site also.
