Create a Site with HTML

Do You Need a Local Server?

If you are creating your website with an online WYSIWYG editor, you won't need a server for testing scripts. Your scripts are automatically generated and installed when you create your contact forms, guestbooks and polls.

The Server

The word server usually refers to a machine attached to the internet that is used to store web sites and provide user access to them.

It can also refer to a software program that manages the process of providing that internet access.

The 2 most popular software servers are Apache and Windows.

Apache servers have been around much longer than Windows versions and provide better security features.

Both versions can be installed on a PC to simulate an internet environment for the purpose of testing interactive features like MYSQL and various CGI functions written in PHP and Perl as you build a web site.

In theory you could actually set up your own personal server and connect to the internet using the popular Apache or Windows server software. We don't recommend it.

First, most PCs are too slow to be used for this purpose. Second, unless you know what you are doing the security risk would be enormous.

The installation of a local host server is not something that beginners should attempt. Get some experience creating websites and testing forms online by uploading them to your web space.
